Woody Woodpecker Cup (1965)

Another recent antique mall find is this wonderful Woody Woodpecker plastic cup, dated 1965, W.L.P. (Walter Lantz Productions.), featuring a mirror image of the wacky winged one on both sides as his hair ingeniously swoops into a curl to form the handle of the cup. The crazed look in those eyes makes me think that he can't wait to sink his pointy lil beak into the wooden, tree trunk texture that makes up the rest of the cup, just as I can't wait to fill it with some cereal! Paid $6 for it, which seems accurate according to current eBay prices-- if you gotta have one too there's plenty listed there from the $5 - $10 range. (*insert Woody Woodpecker laugh here)

What, no comment yet about our favorite cartoon redhead?

As I recall hearing (secondhand) the story, Walter Lantz said that during his honeymoon a woodpecker pecked its way through the roof. Such a crazy antic planted the seed for the creation of Woody.

I know the two Woodys are attached at the hair. Are they attached at the neck, too? I like the wooden log look a lot, actually. It's so kitsch!

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only WW fan left on earth!

they're not connected at the neck, the design doesn't quite reach that far enough around the cup for them to touch like the hair handle does. There are holes directly through the cup though where his eyes are

(just joking)
